SigEp Traveling Staff Visits Lawrence Tech

Article from SigEp Regional Director blog:

Patrick Murphy

Patrick Murphy

Greetings! My name is Patrick Murphy, and I am the regional director for Region 5, which includes the great states of Ohio and Michigan, plus one chapter in northern Kentucky. I like to refer to my region as “the heart of it all” and believe that I have the best 21 chapters in the country!

I am originally from the Atlanta, Georgia, and I decided to go to college at Northeastern University (MA Eta) in downtown Boston. I lived down the street from Fenway Park and it was hard not to become a fan of a great team like the Red Sox. At Northeastern, I earned my degree in psychology with a minor in business. Northeastern is a 5-year program, because we are a co-op school, so I participated in three 6-month internships in financial sales and culinary school in Florence, Italy. Through these internships, I learned that my future career aspirations are to be part of a financial sales team and also a partner in a restaurant. Funny how that works out, huh?

Our regional director team has been traveling as “road warriors” for a month now, and I feel as though it has gone by really fast. Every day is a new experience, and that makes waking up in the morning exciting. I enjoy meeting so many new people, and living out of my car has been even more fun than I imagined. The chapters and volunteers that I have met have already made this experience unforgettable!

Recruitment season has begun and I could not be happier! During my recent chapter visit at Lawrence Technological University (MI Theta) I took part in a recruitment event that was an Iron Chef competition. This was exciting for me to be a part of because of my culinary experience. During the competition, we had two brothers and one potential new member on each team and I was the sous-chef, helping with the presentation of the food. We made an Asian salad, with a topping of nuts and pineapple, and a delicious chicken sandwich with vegetables, on ciabatta bread. Our team did a great job, had a lot of support, and we won honors for most creative and most innovative dish.

The past few weeks have been filled with so many amazing events and stories. I love my job and working with chapters to make them stronger is something that I take great pride in. My time on the road has also helped me learn a lot about myself and I know that I am growing just like my chapters! I can’t wait to see what happens tomorrow and I will keep you all updated on my journey.
